Does my donation go directly to Obama for America?

Yes.  Sellers should donate directly to the official grassroots fundraising page on BarackObama.com.  Yardsaleforobama.com does not collect campaign contributions of any kind.

What are the best ways to support Obama for America?

If you want to support the president you need to make sure you're registered to vote. Also, sign up with the BarackObama.com to get involved. Connect on: Facebook and Twitter.

Participating in YardSaleforObama.com is just another way for people who have already done what they can to further support the president. YardSaleforObama.com is a grassroots fundraising effort and not an official part of Obama for America.  (They just laid the groundwork for us to do grassroots fundraising.)  BarackObama.com encourages supporters to initiate grassroots fundraising projects.  The entire Yard Sale for Obama event is one grassroots fundraising project.  Read more about the grassroots fundraising at BarackObama.com

Do I have to have a yard sale?

No.  Yard sales though fun and very classic Americana can be a bit of work. Instead of having one in your front yard, you can opt to sell your item or items online, (at sites like Craigslist, eBay, YardSale). Your one item may not seem like much of a yard sale on its own, but when we all sell one or two items together it adds up to a big sale, not to mention a fundraiser to re-elect our President.  The bigger the sale the more that shoppers are likely to hear about the event as a whole.

What if I am not around for the event weekend?

Not a problem.  We've been inspired by the movin' and shakin' on kickoff weekend, Sept 22 - 23, so it's not too late to be a part of this movement here on through to election day. You can post your items ahead of the sale or after.  Selling something you no longer need to someone who would rather have it is good for everyone.  Consider giving a portion of what you make to Obama for America by donating through the grassroots fundraising page.  If you don't have time to sell, you can still make a donation and encourage your friends to do the same.

Who thought up this event?

Good question.  The same peeps that brought you the Obama to Space mission.  A small, but fearless group of inspired, Bay Area professionals - you know who you are- kicked off the concept initially with a little video and website.  At that time, everyone couldn't stop talking about the yard/garage/white elephant sales they had growing up. Mix up that nostalgia with the best of modern day social media, (ehr Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter...), peer to peer commerce (Craigstlist, eBay, but also Etsy and Square) and flash sales (namely Gilt) and voila! It soon grew to a team of co-hosts throughout the country all working together to ensure that the word gets out about a cool, new way to get more grassroots fundraising done in the run up to the 2012 presidential election.
